Description
Taxi drivers in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian province, began a strike early on Thursday, leaving many local commuters stuck on streets and arousing concern about the controversially rigid manner of enforcing traffic regulations by local police.
Taxi drivers said they staged the strike in response to a recent surge in penalties handed out by the police. A bus driver, surnamed Chen, said one of his colleagues was fined four times on Wednesday, with the penalty mounting to 600 yuan ($88), and dared not drive on Thursday.
Another driver claimed he was given three fines on Wednesday and that his driver's qualification will be revoked if he receives another penalty. In response to the situation, he suggested that the local traffic authority show leniency to taxi drivers to alleviate their concern.
