On April 17, 2005, some 16,000 workers at the company went on strike for three days, demanding the establishment of a labour union. This was the fourth time the workers had gone on strike since 2000. And with the assistance of the ACFTU in Shenzhen’s Bao’an District, the workers finally established a union on July 30, 2005. This proved to be a rather hollow victory, however, as the management was allowed to nominate the union officers. This was only one example of workers demanding the establishment of a union. Given the increasing tensions between labour and management and the lack of any real mediating mechanism, it was by no means the last.
